শব্দমূলের (Root) পূর্বে Prefix (উপসর্গ) এবং শব্দমূলের পরে Suffix (অনুসর্গ/ প্রত্যয়) শব্দ যোগ করে নতুন শব্দ গঠন করা যায়। আর একে Word Formation ও বলা হয়।
Hi guys, আপনাদের যাদের Cadre Choice এর মধ্যে Premier Cadre Choice দিচ্ছেন Such as Admin, Police, Foreign, Health etc. তাদের জন্য সবচেয়ে জরুরি English. Because এসব Premier Cadre এর ক্ষেত্রে English টা Important এবং এই English এর জন্য অনেকে তাদের পছন্দের Cadre অর্জন করতে পাচ্ছেন না। Preliminary সক্ষম হলেও Written এ গিয়ে পিছলে যাচ্ছেন বার বার। তাই English এ ভালো করতে ছোট ছোট কিছু Item always মাথায় রাখা খুবই জরুরি।English এর মধ্যে সবচেয়ে জরুরি Word Formation আর এটাকে জয় করতে কিছু Technic অবলম্বন করলেই হাজারো Word Formation নিজে নিজে আয়ত্ব করা সম্ভব।তাই আসুন এরকম কিছু Grammatical এর মধ্যে দিয়ে Word Formation জানতে পারি।
আপনারা অবশ্যই বাংলায় উপসর্গ অনুসর্গ পড়েছেন যার কোনটি শব্দের আগে ও পড়ে বসে নতুন শব্দ গঠন করে বা বিপরীত শব্দ গঠন করে অনুরূপ ইংরেজিতেও Prefix এবং Suffix এর পরে কিছু নতুন শব্দ গঠন করতে পারে। Prefix এবং Suffix এর মধ্যে রয়েছে en, un, im, or, tr, ment, tion, ion, sion, ier, able, ed, ive, ty, ise, dis, ইত্যাদি। এই Prefix এবং Suffix গুলো যে শুধু মাত্র নতুন শব্দ তৈরি করে তা নয়, এগুলো যোগ করাতে প্রতিটি Word যেমন Noun থেকে Verb হবে আবার Verb থেকে Noun, Adjective etc আর এভাবেই বেশি বেশি Practice এর মাধ্যমে Word Formation, Word Meaning, Vocabulary, Spelling, Word Making সহ সকল বিষয় আয়ত্বে চলে আসবে।
- এবার Prefix এর সংঞ্জাসহ ব্যবহার জেনে কিছু Word আয়ত্ব করতে চেষ্টা করি।
- Prefix হলো একটি অথবা একাধিক অক্ষর যা কোন শব্দের প্রথমে যোগ করে নতুন শব্দ গঠন করে।
- যেমনঃ Happy= সুখি Unhappy= অসুখি
- Suffix হলো একটি অথবা একাধিক অক্ষর যা কোন শব্দের শেষে যোগ করে নতুন শব্দ গঠন করে।
- যেমনঃ Good= ভালো Goodness= ধার্মিকতা
Prefix: (উপসর্গ)
- Pre অর্থ Before এবং Fix অর্থ to fasten (বেধে রাখা বা যোগ) সুতরাং Prefix বলতে বুঝায় শব্দের পূর্বে অবস্থানকারী বা যোগ করা বর্ণ বা বর্ণসমষ্টি।
- Re + Examine = Reexamine এখানে re হলো Prefix, Examine হলো root word বা শব্দমূল এর সাথে Prefix যুক্ত হয়ে নতুন শব্দ গঠন করা হয়েছে Reexamine. এখানে শব্দের অর্থের সম্প্রসারণ বা পরিবর্ধন হয়েছে। আর এটাই হলো Prefix দিয়ে নতুন শব্দ গঠন করার কৌশল।
- Un= না (not)= Unhappy, Unjust, Uncommon, Unpaid, Unready, Unable, Uneasy, Unfit, Unkind, Unlock, Unofficial, Unreal, Unseen, Unsuccessful.
- En=বৃদ্ধি (Increase)= Encourage, Enrich, Enlarge, Enjoy, Endanger, Enclose, Ensure, Enable, Entangle, Enflame, Encounter, Encompass.
- Re= পুনরায় (Again)= Rewrite, Reenter, Recall, Return, Rethink, Readmission, React, Rebirth, Refresh, Reliable, Rename, Reproduce, Repay.
- In/Ir= না (not)= Incorrect, Impossible, Irregular, Inability, Inactive, Incomplete, Indirect, Indiscipline, Indefinite, Incorporate, Incapable, Input.
- Dis= বিপরীত (Opposite)= Dislike, Discomfort, Dishonor, Dismiss, Discontent, Discount, Disgust, Dissatisfy.
- Non= না (not)= Nonsmoker, Nonstop, Non-registered, Nonsense, Non collegiate, Non-party.
- Over= উপরে/ অতিরিক্ত (Above/Extra)= Overtime, Overwork, Overnight
- Il= বিপরীত (Opposite)= Illegal, Illiterate, Illogical, Ill-Practice
- Mis= Wrong (ভুল)= Misdeed, Mistake, Misguide, Misunderstand, Misdate, Misuse, Misfire, Misdeal.
- Sub= অধিন (Under)= Substation, Submarine, Subcommittee, Subdue, Subside, Subtitle, Subway
- Anti= বিরোধী (Against)= Anti-nucleus, Anti-aircraft, Anti- liberation,
- Im= Immigrant, Immobile, Immoral, Immortal, Impart, Imperfect, Impersonal, Impolite, Impossible, Impure.
- De= Decrease, Derail, Delight, Deforest, Deform, Denote, Depart, Deport, Derange.
- Out= Outset, Outlook, Out-turn, Outdo, Outcome, Outlet, Outbreak, Output, Outcry.
- Super= Supernatural, Super-heat, Superhuman, Superman, Supervision.
- Be= Before, Behind, Beside, Be-dew, Befit, Be-fool, Bestir, Betake.
- Semi= Semicolon, Semifinal, Semivowel.
- Post=Postcard, Postdate, Postgraduate.
- Pro= Pronoun, Profile, Prolong, Pronominal.

Suffix: (প্রত্যয়)
পদনির্দেশ, অর্থের পরিবর্তন বা পরিবর্ধনের জন্য শব্দ, শব্দমূল, কিংবা শব্দগুচ্ছের সাথে যে বর্ণ বা বর্ণসমষ্টি সংযুক্ত করে নতুন শব্দ গঠন করা হয় তাকে Suffix (প্রত্যয়)বলে।
Education + al=Educational (শিক্ষা বিষয়ক)
এখানে মূলশব্দ (Root word) Education (শিক্ষা) এর সাথে Suffix –al যুক্ত হয়ে Educational (শিক্ষা বিষয়ক) শব্দটি গঠিত হয়েছে।আর এভাবে নতুন শব্দ গঠন করা যায়।
- -al= Optional, Refusal, Verbal, Formal, Educational. National, Mortal, Legal
- -ship= Studentship, Relationship, Scholarship, Leadership, Friendship, Hardship
- -ment= Shipment, Supplement, Entertainment.
- -ism= Realism, Hinduism, Patriotism, Socialism
- -ful= Helpful, Eventful, Careful, Mouthful
- -en= Wooden, Woolen, Earthen, Golden
- -ure= Exposure, Composure, Pleasure
- -dom= Kingdom, Wisdom, Freedom
- -age= Marriage, Breakage, Bondage
- -ist= Dentist, Novelist, Anarchist
- -ion= Action, Attention, Oration
- -kin= Manikin, Limpkin, Napkin
- -let= Booklet, Leaflet, Streamlet
- -ish= Publish, Banish, Finish
